Where to Get Cheap Moving Boxes

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Relocating to a new flat or house? We’ll unless you get a removal company to do everything for you, you are going to need a lot of boxes, and it isn’t always easy to find them, especially boxes in good condition. Here’s an article with good tips on where to find good quality boxes to help you move to your new home in an organised way.

moving houseIf you’re moving, we all know you’re going to need boxes. But do you know where you can get lots of boxes for cheap or free? Did you know there are several options available to you other than paying high prices from expensive moving companies? Try some of these helpful tips.

If there is a company in your city whose sole existence is to provide cheap moving boxes, call them first. They will be your best bet for a lot of good quality moving boxes with uniform sizes. You may also find new or recycled moving boxes that are cheap if you Google for a company that sells them online.

Your local grocery store will also have a large supply of boxes at the end of the day. Speak to a manager about taking some off their hands for them. If there is no manager available, speak directly to the stock boy or stock girl. They’d be happy to pass them on to you and not have to break them down themselves. Nothing is cheaper than free!

Ask someone who has just moved to the neighborhood if you might use the boxes they have left over. They’re most likely trying to find a place to get rid of them anyway.

Try Craigslist or your local branch of Freecycle for cheap moving boxes. See the resources for links to both sites. There also may be used moving boxes at your local recycling depot (if you’re lucky).

Try to find boxes of a uniform size and shape, if possible. This will make packing your moving truck a lot easier and will provide so much extra space! Also, it might be really handy to find boxes with handles on the sides. Be careful not pack extremely heavy boxes that you cannot lift easily. And be sure to stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on the top to avoid catastrophe!

Moving Overseas – What You Should Know

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Here’s a few tips about moving overseas or to another country.  As Diane says, it can be stressful enough moving to another home in the same country, let alone moving to a completely different part of the world.

moving overseas

As if moving across the street isn’t stressful enough, you want to move across the planet? You are insane, but so are more and more people who are starting to do it. During this process there are so many things that can go wrong, moving overseas is a daunting task, you will need a professional international mover to help you along the way.

Tracking Down and Staying In Contact

To get a hold of one of these amazing international mover professionals, one must search the World Wide Web in yonder for such a creature. Google does it pretty well, just search on there. Once you have found a company that looks pretty swell, you should give them a ring and have a chat. Remember they are experienced with the inexperienced, so don’t worry if you have no idea how it works.

An international moving company should definitely visit your house and give you a quote, if you are happy with that then they might be the company for you.

You should always have one spokesman for the company you can talk to on a more professional level, none of this ‘every time you phone up you are speaking to a different person’. If this happens it will make the process longer and more stressful, I advice you asking to speak to the same person every time and build up a relationship based on trust, so that if anything goes wrong he/she is the person to go to.

The Big Day

So it is the day of your big move, now to pack your things. Nope! You are not allowed to, through law you have to get the professionals to pack for you because of the current terrorism threats; logically it wouldn’t be safe if anyone were allowed to place anything on ships or planes. At least it takes a load off of your hands, and they will do it to a professional standard.

Remember if you have any pets you are going to take with you, get it checked before hand, get a pet passport and have your pet quarantined if needs be. This all depends on where you are going; different countries have different rules and regulations.

Your New Home Abroad

Your belongings should arrive at the new house before you do, so you should arrive with the items waiting at your doorstep with a friendly company worker. Then you can unpack and live a new life in your new country of residence!

If you did have a pet you might want to go and pick them up.

So there you have it, moving overseas in a nutshell. Most people use shipping containers to move there belongings to another country, you can get a 20 foot or 40 foot container at an expensive price. You can actually fly your belongings over there if you are in a rush, but that is even more expensive. A 20 foot container is approximately $8000, and the rest is all changeable depending on the size of your house, the amounts the moving company charges, taxes, and many more things.

But if you are starting a new life abroad, good luck to you.

Things to Hate About Moving

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Here’s a light hearted look at the joys of moving from one flat or house to another, something which for most of us isn’t our favorite past time. So just remember that once you have found your dream flat to rent, or your dream house to let, there’s still a long road ahead.

moving house

Is there anything that is more fun in life than moving? Yes that is a totally sarcastic comment because really there can be nothing in life that is more of an aggravating headache. Ah moving, how do we hate thee, let us count the ways.

There are so many things to hate about moving, here are just a few:

• Packing: Before you can move all of your stuff to your new place, you have to pack it all up. This is a hassle from the get go. First you have to find boxes to pack all of your belongings into which means plenty of trips to the grocery stores asking for their left over boxes. Then you have to make sure that you pack everything just so to ensure that nothing gets harmed in the move. Finally you get a good slap in the face from reality when you realize you will need a moving truck as big as a tractor trailer to haul all of your stuff to your new residence.

• Renting a moving truck: Just what you want to do on your weekend off, rent a moving truck. After you figure out what size you need you have to make sure it is available and then go pick it up and listen to the salesperson try to sell you a bunch of add-ons that you don’t need like a moving dolly or packing blankets. And what is with that smell that is always in the cab of the moving trucks don’t people know about the wonderful invention of deodorant? Then you get to experience the joy of actually packing up the moving truck. There is no way to do this without absolutely sweating off about 20 pounds and you are inevitably going to break something while trying to squeeze boxes here and there.

• Bribing friends: The time to see how many friends you really do have is when you are moving. You may think you have hundreds of buddies, but good luck getting two or three to commit to helping you for a fun filled weekend of moving your stuff. The ones you will be able to convince will more than likely require some form of compensation like beer and pizza. What’s worse is that once they help with your move you are now on their list of people that owe them one and you know they will cash in before too long.

• Unpacking: When the rental truck has been swept out, filled with gas, and returned and your friends have all left with full stomachs of pizza that you bought, you sit back and let the dust clear. But not so fast, you still have the daunting challenge of unpacking all of your belongings. You try in vain to find a home for all of your things but before too long you realize that everything won’t fit into your new place.

After all the fun you realize that you will either have to have a yard sale or rent a storage unit. This is where you scream at the tops of your lungs and realize just how much you hate moving.

Jason Kay recommends that you find and compare moving companies at EasyStorageSearch.com, where you can also quickly locate self storage units and moving truck rentals near you.

How to Prepare For Relocation

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The worst part about moving to a new flat or house is having to pack up everything and get it all to the other side in one piece. Here’s a great article that gives some practical tip and advice on relocating.

relocating

Moving or relocating may be exciting and fun for some, and quite a stressful activity to others. The possibility of packing and unpacking can be quite stressing. However, to prepare for relocation should create a lot of positive anticipation to you and your family as you take the next big step in moving to a different house after selling your own, or moving into a house, you own for the very first time.

How do you prepare for relocation? Below are some tips to give you an idea of the what, how and when in moving house.

1. Take down things primarily. Everything you own must pass through the front door as you move. Be sure to have everything down near the door before your moving day. You can store these things in boxes. It does not matter how many boxes they consume as long as they are stored safe and ready to go when you move.

2. Make sure to remove clutter around the house. Clear out anything you have not used in a while. Take time to organize and determine things that are no longer in use and pieces of junks as well. It is better to have them disposed of right away than taking them to your new location.

3. Hire a moving van to save you from tiring yourself out and hurting your back. There are professional movers that can greatly help you in moving to your new location. This is especially invaluable when it comes to dealing with your large furniture such as the living room set, beds and appliances.

4. The things you can put in a box! Use boxes that are manageable for you to carry. Tapes, DVDs, CDs and books can be stored in different paper boxes. Confectionery boxes are good for packing too. You can ask these from your local shop or nearby grocery. Make sure that these boxes are strong enough to hold your things and add packing tape for reinforcement.

5. Pack fragile items with extra care. The best packing items to use are bubble wrap and newsprint. You can ask or buy large sheets or rolls from your local printer. Another good alternative is your good collection of old newspapers. Ceramic materials and other breakable items are best stored in these wrapping materials. Mattresses should be wrapped carefully too.

6. Marking your box is invaluable in your relocation. With all the stuff you have, it will prove to be a very taxing job trying to find out what each box contains by opening them one by one when you reach your new home. It is best to label them according to where they should go into the new house or mark them where they come from in your old house. This way you will have a better idea of finding things. Labels should be on the top of the box and at both sides. You can also help in faster moving by using some signs for your new house like bedroom one, bedroom two or kitchen so that your move-day helpers will know where each box should go.

7. Make a plan and drawing of your new home to where furniture and large appliances should be put. This way, the removal men does not have to waste time waiting to ask you where these items should be.

8. Make an essential box for your move day. This box should contain a couple of snack items, tissue or toilet paper, a bottle of two or mineral water, coffee and tea fixings and a kettle. A drill, hammer, screwdriver, nails, screws and wall plugs should be put in another bag.

Time to pack and have a happy moving day!
